PARK(ING) DAY WORLDWIDE
BEIRUT, LEBANON
Created in 2005, PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where citizens, artists and designers transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks, created by San Francisco based design firm Rebar. The idea behind it is to raise awareness about the importance put on parking spaces and not green spaces, and how a single parking spot can be used to create a beautiful area to enjoy. After a classmate from undergrad was introduced to the idea, she brought it over to a few of us in the Landscape Architecture undergrad program. With the help of the Landscape Society of the university- of which I was the PR and VP for the respective years-we founded the first Park(ing) Day in Lebanon in September 2012 and continued it in 2013 (collaborating with Beirut Green Project and setting up 2 different spot). After that we graduated, so hopefully it’s being continued!
